The 2011 Leadership Program for Grade 5/6 students at St Margaret's Primary School.
Today students began their Leadership expedition by setting of to Antarctica and following the amazing journey of Ernest Shackleton in 1914.
80 Grade 5/6 pupils from the Maribyrnong Primary School are spending 3 weeks looking at the leadership lessons to come out of this expedition and how they can apply the strategies to their own experiences.
In the first session they got to experience the bitter cold of the Antarctic and understand the conditions Shackleton's crew had to endure before they were able to manufacture their own rescue after 634 days on the ice.
In teams they considered the 10 Leadership Strategies and contemplate what they could mean for the students and how they could assist them in their leadership roles within the school.

Ice tubs - replicating the temperatures in Antarctica

"Believe you can reach your goal. You won't get there in one go, you need to take little steps."
Week 2
This session focussed on practical examples of leadership and teamwork. The children looked to the habits of geese for inspiration! They discovered that geese have a common goal, work together and most importantly, encourage constant and effective communication.

The final activity for the session introduced the concept of RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS! The activity provided the opportunity for all students to discover the satisfaction of making someones day and the thrill of receiving. The beginning of a 'giving philosophy' that leads into the HOPE Program that the students will undertake throughout the year.

Week 3
This final session started of by a recount of the Random Acts of Kindness the students experience through the past week. They shared how these actions made them feel and how beneficial this was to the school community. The focus this session however was on teams and teamwork. The students were divided into teams which will be the teams they work with throughout the year on the HOPE Program. Each team developed their own Coat of Arms displaying their team name, mascot, objective and "SAYWHAT"s (the things that people will say about this team at the end of the year!!) The teachers took the teams through the details of the HOPE Program and Mike showed the students how to complete a One Page Plan to help them plan actions to achieve the goals they have set themselves.
Many thanks to the students and teachers for their help and support. I am sure we learnt more from you than you have learnt from us! Good luck with your activities in the coming year.

Leading on from the Leadership Program, these Grade 5/6 students organised a 'Mini Fete' for their school. In their teams they applied the lessons and skills learnt to work cooperatively and put together a vision for their individual stalls. Team Leaders supported individual team members to develop action plans and strategies to turn the vision into reality. After much hard work the result was a fantastic school 'Mini Fete' that raised funds for a local charity. Pictures of the event prove the success of the fete and entrepreneurial skills of these wonderful student. Congratulations!
